John Galt was born 2nd May 1779 at this building on High Street; the site it is now home to the Halifax Bank of Scotland. John Galt was a prolific novelist having published several accounts of his travels in exotic lands and several biographies of note, his works were a moderate success in his own lifetime, although they have become much more appreciated posthumously.
He is also responsible for the founding of the City of Guelph in South-western Ontario, Galt worked closely with the cities planners to design the area, giving it the aesthetic appeal of a European town.
